Three Cost-Effective Ways to Invest in Your Technical Future

Just like the equipment you use, your skills require updating on a regular basis. Here are 3 cost-effective ways to improve your technology skills:

1. Time

Surround yourself with relevant technology and experts who use it. From trade publications to attending local/regional industry conferences, the constant reminder to stay atop technology and trends is the greatest bang-for-the-buck you’ll get (most are available for free)! Working in your favorite high-end warehouse operation is also a great way to stay engaged while earning a wage too!

2. Training

Most of us [in the event business] don’t hold a degree in whatever it is we do everyday so formal training opportunities are an often overlooked means of investing in ourselves. Some companies offer Open House events which is a good means of dipping your toe in the pool. Others host formal training that’s open to outside entities (other companies, freelancers, IATSE). There’s usually a cost associated but it’s often based on the day rate of the folks attending which tends to be in-line with expectations … that is, before you earn the next bump in wage with your new skills.

3. Travel

Budget like a business. Spending several thousand dollars to attend a national trade show with classes, manufacturers, and your peers isn’t easy but can be budgeted for. Set aside one day rate every month and you’ll have enough money to consider investing which trade show best suits you.

From free opportunities to planned investments, there are plenty of ways to improve your technology skills thatt are cost-effective.
