How to Increase Your Earning Potential Without a College Degree

The economy is booming and unemployment is at a record low … if you’re not earning more than ever, there are ways to change that!

Formal education and training opportunities are sure-fire ways to develop your skills and increase your earning potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those with a bachelor’s degree earn 65% more than their peers with a high school diploma (even more dramatic for master’s and above). However, college might not be the best bang-for-your-buck investment.

Trade Schools:

There are more than 7 million jobs available across the country that don’t require a four-year degree and trade schools can help fill them. Better yet, attending a trade school can save up to $40K per year in tuition and housing. Consider this … student debt is nearing crisis-level at $1.5T yet most graduates can’t afford to repay their loans without a “corner office job”!

Manufacturer/Speciality Training:

This might be somewhat specific to the Event Production industry but it’s amazing how a particular skill can boost any technician’s day rate and demand for their time. Look around and see what companies are paying extra for … then get trained in those areas!

Beyond free Open House events and low-cost trade shows, there are formal, sometimes certified, training opportunities available in almost every industry. Dig a little to find out where your peers get trained and where top employers send their employees. It might be out-of-state but that shouldn’t be a deal breaker if you plan ahead. Develop a budget, save money, and attend the training that will have the greatest impact on your income.

The bottom line is, more education is almost guaranteed to increase your earning potential and college isn’t the only option. Find what fits your schedule and budget.
